One of the easiest (and least expensive) ways to dress up your bed is by changing up your pillow cases every so often. Since we usually need a few pairs on hand for when laundry time comes, I love the idea of maximizing your pillow case options by making your own double-sided pillow cases!. That way, one set of pillow cases is really like two and you can change it up as your heart desires. Today, we will create a bunch of mix-and-match double-sided pillow cases. Here's how!
Materials:
- 2 yards fabric
- existing pillow case
- fabric scissors
- standard paper
- tape
- pen
- ruler
- straight pins
- sewing machine
Steps:
1. Lay out flat a pillow case that you already have and want to duplicate in size. Tape together sheets of paper so that you've covered the entire surface of the pillow case (this should be about 9 pieces of standard sized paper).
2. Trace the pillow case on the paper and cut to make your pattern, leaving 5 inches extra on one of the shorter ends (this will be the opening where you will fold it).
3. Lay your new pattern on top of your fabric and trace. This will be your "sew" line.
4. Measure out 1/2" out from the "sew" line, all the way around, to create your "cut" line, and cut.
5. Lay your cut fabric on top of another piece of fabric (that will be the other side of your pillow case). To make mix-and-match pillows, combine different fabrics on each side. Place the front sides of the fabric together, and use straight pins to secure in place.
6. Now use the top layer of fabric as your pattern and cut so both pieces are the same.
7. To create the fold at the opening of the pillow case, fold down 2-1/2 inches at the smaller size of each piece of fabric.
8. Sew the three sides (2 long sides and one short bottom) with a sewing machine. Turn the pillow case inside out when done. And repeat to make a second pillow case to match!
With two different sides to each set of pillow cases, they're easy to change up depending on your mood for that day!
