DIY a Sofa Throw

Do you have any problems with a newer couch worn and torn by pets and children easily? A sofa throw is a good choice. From inexpensive sheeting to denim, corduroy or drapery fabric, there are textile options that help a sofa throw fit most budgets. A savvy homeowner, or a first-time renter, can attempt the creation of a throw with confidence in the outcome.

You Will Need:

Fabric
Tape measure
Fabric-marking pencil
Scissors
Sewing machine
Iron
Shelf gripper fabric
2-inch foam pipe insulation

Instructions:

1.Measure the sofa from the floor on one side, up the outside to the top of the arm, across the arm top, down to the top of the seat, across the seat, up the arm on the opposite side, across the arm top and down to the floor. Add 18 inches to this measurement and record the result as the cut length.

2.Measure the sofa from the floor at the front of the piece, up to the seat, across the seat to the back, up the back and over and down to the floor. Add 10 inches to this measurement and record the result as the cut width.

3.Sew widths and lengths of fabric together to create one piece equal to the cut width and length measurements.

4.Fold the throw in half widthwise, and then half lengthwise. Align all the edges carefully. Lay it on the table and draw the corner curve. You will cut all four corners at the same time. Mark the outside edges of the throw 20 inches away from each corner. Place a mark on the throw 6 inches from the corner, on an imaginary diagonal line that would intersect the corner at a 45-degree angle. Draw a new cutting line from starting at one 20-inch mark and gently curving to the 6-inch mark and then back to the 20-inch mark on the remaining side.

5.Fold the outer edge, wrong side to wrong side, 1/2 inch and press, fold again 1/2 inch and press. Stitch this hem in place, sewing close to the second folded edge.

6.Measure the width of the top of the back of the sofa.

7.Cut one piece of rubber gripper fabric 14 inches wide and equal in length to the measurement of the top of the back of the sofa. Place this fabric on the sofa in its appropriate place.

8.Align one length edge of the throw to the floor and position the throw, centered on the width of the sofa, across the sofa seat to the back.

9.Align the remaining long edge to the floor along the back of the sofa. Smooth the fabric up the back, over the top and down the inside back to the junction of the seat and back. Tuck the excess fabric into the crevasse between the seat and back.

10.Align the ends of the throw with the floor on each end, smooth the fabric up and over the arm and down to the seat. Tuck the excess fabric into the crevice between the arm and seat.

11.Cut a piece of 2-inch foam pipe insulation equal to the length of the sofa seat less 8 inches. Cut two pieces equal to the length of the front of the arm to the back of the sofa, less 8 inches, and push these pieces into the fabric tucks.
